- Re: Mac OS crashes We've seen similar, where it works fine at setup and then later after it goes home it causes network hangs or system crashes (with 9.1.8 and 9.1.9). The Helpdesk's solution has been to uninstall client and install older 9.1.7, but that can't keep on forever.
- Your Mac will generally run OK by itself with few serious issues, but when applications or the OS itself starts to freeze or crash it’s recommended that you invest a little time in sensible housekeeping duties. A few activities you might consider are: Defragment your hard disk, especially if you use massive files such as video.
- Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button. This will install the version of OS X you had installed.
Install El Capitan or Later from Scratch
Crashes Mac Quadra. Crashes Mac Classic II and LC. Crashes Mac IIfx. Startup iMac G3, Retina and Aluminum and other Modern iMacs. Startup Powermac PCI.
If possible backup your files.

- Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the CommandandRkeys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
- Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
- When Disk Utility loads select the volume (indented entry, usually Macintosh HD) from the Device list.
- Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
- Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
- Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
- Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
- Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.
This will install the version of OS X you had installed.
